We knew business was broken pre-pandemic, and celebrated the new normal that emerged after. Too bad it was so short-lived. Instead of waiting around for the inevitable disasters to try again, let’s shape the next new normal with intention.
Chicken or egg?
The problem: Old-normal business is machine-like. Chop it all into parts. Dehumanize employees into assets. Think short-term. Add misaligned incentives and we have what’s known as an “unsatisfactory equilibrium point.”
What keeps us stuck? All businesses are complex systems, and this is an unfamiliar and scary way of thinking for most. The average brain doesn’t work this way. The current approach feels safe and controllable, even though it can’t possibly survive.
The conundrum: The people who can see and evolve systems aren’t valued. O-Types (curious synthesizers), generalists and polymaths naturally see what others can’t. We play at the intersections to make the whole work better, but we’re minorities, and there are rarely formal roles for us.
Evolving businesses to be more resilient, adaptive and human-friendly requires more of us, empowered at every level, but the status quo prevents that.
